The door to the Mountains
The town of Guadagnolo is the gateway to another world. He welcomes those arriving from the immense plain of the Tiber and prepares it for the domain of the mountains. The Monte Guadagnolo, one of the prominent peaks of the Prenestini Mountains, is the first corrugation of this stretch of the Apennines from which the sea can still be glimpsed very well, towards the west, and which allows to savor in plan-sequence, towards the east, the future chains we will explore.
Description of the trail
So, taking to go down to the first, still far, the valley floor, the first great destination is the Sanctuary of the Mentorella. Place so dear to Karol Wojtyla Papa and one of the passage sites of San Benedetto. From the Sanctuary, the path becomes a real path, losing a lot of difference with a series of turns, cutting the eastern slope. Under a series of cliffs you return on a dirt road up to a clearing with panel. Leaving the road to the right that descends, continue to the one that initially develops on the flat, on the left. The walk is gentle and goes through a sparse oak forest, until at the end you lose a little altitude up to the provincial road. Cross it to continue on another white road. Going along it, without turns, and passing through the water channels, there are some productive activities next to another paved road. You walk on the same, to the left, up to the fork in the uphill that goes towards Cerreto Laziale. Going along Via Costa sole for about 300 m, turn right into Via della Circonvallazione, following it for about 1 km, then turn right and take a slightly downhill path that leads to a small flat plowing.
You start climbing in a Castagneto until you reach the SP47 provincial road and then take a dirt road that leads to the path that leads to Rocca Canterano. At the village, follow the Roman road that you must leave on the right after about 200 meters, entering a secondary road that leads to
the next village of Canterano and again until you again intercept the SP47 provincial road. Finally, by entering a secondary road that leads to the banks of the river Aniene and from here continue in the direction of Subiaco.
